The fish was discovered off California's central coast by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI).This is the first specimen to be found with it's transparent head intact. What's more surprising and strange about this fish is that the small beads at the front side of its head aren't actually its eyes. The eyes are the big lens-like green structures inside its dome. Scientists discovered that the eyes can pivot, like a birdwatcher pointing binoculars.
"The barreleye's flat, horizontal fins may allow it to swim very precisely among the siphonophore's stinging tentacles—and if the fish fumbles, the clear, helmet-like shield may protect its eyes, according to MBARI scientists." National Geographic
The barreleyes fish lives 600 meters below sea level. The fish spends most of its time motionless with the eyes grabbing as much sunlight as possible from the top, since they are upwards, to have a better vision of seeing a pray. Then the eyes rotate forward to follow the pray and eat it.
